Production of final dataset of GAME-HUBEX Regional 4DDA by JSM-SiBUC,
Proceedings CD-ROM of the 6th International Study Conference on
GEWEX in Asia and GAME, 2004 (CD-ROM).
Regional land-atmosphere coupled model (JSM-SiBUC) is applied to the
GAME-HUBEX region to produce a high accuracy dataset with 30km resolution.
The period of the dataset is from 1998/6/21 00Z to 1998/7/22 00Z (31days).
To perform the regional 4DDA (four dimensional data assimilation) accurately,
not only the used model but also the external dataset is very important.
As for the main atmospheric model, JSM (Japan Spectral Model) was provided
from JMA (Japan Meteorolocal Agency) for the GAME community. As for the
land surface model, latest version of SiBUC is adopted to describe presicely
the land surface condition within the domain, especially irrigated farmland
and paddy field must be expressed. As for the external dataset,
GAME-Reanalysis Ver1.5, which was produced by JMA, is used for initial and
external boundary condition. Preliminary simulation was executed.
For some events (ex. end of June), simulated rainfall pattern and its
amount was good accordance with surface measurements. But for other events
(ex. 2nd of July), simulated rainfall was much smaller than observed one.
Through the comparison with upper air sounding data, lower level specific
humidity of GAME-Reanalysis data was found to be smaller than observed one
for that case. Therefore, upper air sounding data in the whole GAME-HUBEX
region are re-assimilated to produce more accurate initial and boundary
conditions. The final dataset of this regional 4DDA includes surface
fluxes (sensible heat, latent heat, etc.) and surface state variables
(soil moisture, surface temperature, etc.) as well as atmospheric
state variables (temperature, humidity, wind, etc.).

Estimation of land use and water usage in the Huaihe river basin from
field survey and satellite analysis,
Proceedings CD-ROM of the 6th International Study Conference on
GEWEX in Asia and GAME, 2004 (CD-ROM).
In this study, land-surface scheme (SiBUC) is applied to the Huaihe River Basin in China, for the quantitative evaluation of vegetation and human activities in the regional hydrological process, using meteorological, hydrological and GMS data obtained during HUBEX-IFO (1998/5/1-8/31). The previous study shows that much water was consumed in farmland as irrigation. By the way, the validation of the amount of water considering the water supply system of this area was not sufficient.
Then, field survey was carried out in crop rotating period (September and October 2003) and crop harvesting period (June 2004). The main purpose of this survey is the identification of land use and water usage systems which are described in the land-surface scheme. A new land use map including detailed crop pattern in the Huaihe River Basin is produced from satellite derived vegetation indices and surface meteorological data. All 1km resolution meshes in this area can be classified into 7 categories (water body, urban area, evergreen /deciduous forest, single/double cropping land, and others). Then, accumulated degree-days value of each mesh during growing period is utilized to divide cropland into 6 types (rice, corn, soybean, peanuts, cotton, and others). Agricultural statistic data of 187 Prefectures in Henan Province are utilized for validating the new land use map. Water usage of this area is also estimated from water use survey and satellite analysis.
Finally, estimated land classification and water usage are applied to land-surface scheme, and output of this simulation is validated from hydrological data (e.g. discharge data, irrigation data and water storage data of reservoir).

Distributed Runoff Model Linking Surface with Groundwater Processes,
Disaster Prevention Research Institute Annuals, No.47C, pp.83-88, 2004.
A method with multi-layer and mesh-typed runoff model using Hydro-BEAM (Hydrological River Basin Environment Assessment Model) is proposed to analyze the integrated hydrological processes. The spatiotemporal simulation is calculated with the kinematic wave model for surface runoff, Richard's equation for unsaturated subsurface flow and the unconfined flow for groundwater. The initial loss of rainfall due to interception by depression storage reprocess is considered here. Moreover the basin division and land use dynamics are introduced to encounter reservoir operation and land utilization with human activities. The proposed model is calibrated for different initial conditions and parameters, and applied into the Yasu River to verify the dynamic linkage between surface and groundwater.
Key Words: Distributed runoff model, Parameterization, Saturated and unsaturated flow,
Spatio-temporal distribution.
